Time to Organize

The Cabrillo Economic Development Corp. has proposed building 146 low-income apartments and homes north of the Santa Paula Freeway at Saticoy Avenue. Cabrillo has promised the neighboring residents they “will have a say-so in what gets built.”

This is the same script used on the Oxnard City Council on March 8. Cabrillo proposed to build a three-story, 32-unit complex next to senior citizens in the Royal Palms Mobile Home Park. Most of the park residents and adjacent businesses opposed the project, but it was unanimously approved.

Cabrillo had been ordered by the City Council to meet with the affected neighbors. When asked that the 12 open patio balconies that face the mobile-home park be redesigned to face the courtyard to reduce noise, Cabrillo refused. That’s neighborhood input?

Cabrillo is a major political force. Its board of directors reads like the Who’s Who of Ventura County. When Cabrillo talks, your City Council listens. The neighbors of this latest Cabrillo target, take notice. Get organized. It will take everything you can do to persuade the Ventura City Council to turn down this project. The senior citizens of Royal Palms Mobile Home Park lost to Cabrillo. I wish you better luck in your battle.
