Former Assemblyman Pat Nolan on Monday surrendered to authorities at a federal prison camp east of Oakland to start serving a 33-month sentence on political corruption charges.

Nolan reported at 12:25 p.m. to the minimum security work camp at Dublin, where he will be assigned a job, likely in landscaping or maintenance, said prison spokeswoman Janice Killian.

Killian said the 43-year-old former lawmaker would share a renovated barracks with three inmates at the prison, which is located on an Army base.

A year ago, a federal grand jury accused the onetime GOP Assembly leader from Glendale of using his office as a racketeering enterprise to solicit a series of bribes from individuals seeking his backing on legislation.

After initially declaring his innocence, Nolan in February resigned from office and pleaded guilty. Nolan said he changed his mind because he feared that a jury trial conviction could mean a longer sentence away from his wife and three children.

At Dublin, Nolan joined three others convicted in a long-running federal probe of political corruption, Killian said. Also serving sentences at the facility are former lobbyist Clayton R. Jackson, onetime Coastal Commissioner Mark L. Nathanson and former Assembly aide Tyrone Netters.
