Football

Tackle Jackie Slater, a Ram for 18 years, has been offered more money to play for Atlanta in 1994. The Rams will not match the offer. Slater said he will make a decision today on where he will play next season, but will not make it public until Friday.

The Houston Oilers and Cody Carlson’s agent are negotiating a new contract that would cut the quarterback’s 1994 pay by $1 million but put him in the starting lineup and clear the way for Warren Moon to be sent to the Minnesota Vikings. . . . Receiver Michael Irvin of the Cowboys continued his protest of the team’s recent coaching change by cleaning out his locker at the Dallas training facility. . . . Lewis Tillman, a running back with the New York Giants, signed a three-year contract worth $2.9 million with the Chicago Bears. . . . The Giants and right tackle Doug Riesenberg agreed on a contract expected to pay him $8.3 million over the next four years.

Hockey

Pittsburgh Penguin center Mario Lemieux, disgusted with the style of play and quality of officiating, said he plans to stop promoting the NHL and will consider retiring this summer. “I’m done with that kind of stuff,” Lemieux said of league public releations. “They can promote the marginal players if they want.” . . . Philadelphia Flyer center Eric Lindros suffered a first-degree shoulder sprain in Monday’s game against the Jets at Winnipeg, but will probably play Thursday against Florida. . . . Mike Colman, 25, a Kansas City Blade defenseman of the International Hockey League, was killed in a one-car crash.

Diego Maradona, who hinted last week that he might retire because he is angry about press scrutiny, said he probably will play for Argentina in the World Cup.
