The top three seeded players--Pete Sampras, Michael Chang and Boris Becker--all won second-round matches in the Japan Open at Tokyo.

The top-seeded player among the women, Kimiko Date of Japan, defeated countrywoman Naoko Kijimuta, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, in the second round.

Ronald Agenor of Haiti upset third-seeded Andrei Medvedev, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-3, and Andrea Gaudenzi of Italy upset fifth-seeded Thomas Muster, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3, in the second round of the Conde de Godo tournament at Barcelona.
