TORRANCE : DDT Cleanup to Begin in 2 Back Yards Next Week

Share

Crews will start work next Monday to remove DDT-contaminated soil from the yards behind two homes on West 204th Street near Torrance.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says it will remove about 8,000 cubic feet of tainted soil from the two yards. At least two families will be relocated during the project, which is expected to take 10 days to two weeks.

Unusually high levels of the banned insecticide DDT were discovered in the back yards during federal testing last month. Although EPA officials say they do not know where the DDT came from, some residents believe it migrated from a nearby federal Superfund site, the former Montrose Chemical Corp. facility, where DDT was manufactured from 1947 to 1982.
