Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : 8 Injured in 5-Car Freeway Pileup

Share

Eight people were injured Friday and traffic on the Golden State Freeway was backed up for miles after a five-car pileup at the Magic Mountain Parkway exit, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The accident prompted the closure of two lanes of the Golden State Freeway for two hours, CHP Officer Wendy Moore said. At one point, traffic was backed up more than three miles.

None of the victims was seriously injured.

The accident occurred about 11:15 a.m. when the driver of a Toyota 4-Runner, who was traveling at the speed limit, rear-ended a Toyota Tercel, which had stopped to exit the northbound freeway, Moore said.

The Tercel slammed into a third car, which veered off the freeway and down an embankment. The Tercel then struck a fourth vehicle before the Tercel’s gas tank exploded and set it on fire, Moore said. A fifth car rear-ended the 4-Runner.

Anthony Scipione, 34, of San Gabriel, the Tercel’s driver, suffered minor burns trying to get his nieces out of the car, Moore said.

Scipione and Amy Moseley, 28, of Valencia, driver of one of the other vehicles, were taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia. Five other occupants of vehicles involved in the accident escaped with minor injuries, but did not require hospitalization.

No charges were filed in connection with the accident, Moore said. An investigation is ongoing.
