BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Jackson Heats Up Talk in the Clubhouse

Share

The Angels were spending most of their time in the clubhouse before the game talking about the frigid weather in Milwaukee, putting on long johns, and planning on how they would keep warm.

Bo Jackson suddenly brought the conversation to a halt.

“I wish you guys will quit worrying about the weather,” he yelled. “I didn’t come all the way here to lose.”

Actually, the weather was not nearly as bad as forecast, with the game-time temperature announced at 48 degrees. The Angels, however, swore it dropped dramatically by the game’s conclusion.

“They tell you it’s psychological,” second baseman Harold Reynolds said, “and pretend like you’re in Hawaii. But as soon as you breathe outside, and can see your breath, you tell yourself, ‘Hey, this ain’t no Hawaii.’ ”

Pitcher Mark Leiter wants to help those families whose children are suffering from terminal diseases, which is why he established the non-profit Ryan Leiter Fund in memory of his son.

“The biggest shame of the whole thing,” Leiter said, “would be not do anything to let people know about it.

“I didn’t want to look back and say, ‘Here I am a ballplayer, and you have all the media around, and I didn’t do anything in Ryan’s name to hopefully some day come up with a cure for this.’ ”
