The Weingart Urban Center YMCA is sponsoring free health education courses as part of its monthlong 10th anniversary celebration this month.

The courses--on weight loss, blood pressure control and diabetes--will start Monday in the newly renovated health and fitness center.

The Weingart YMCA will sponsor an April 16 music festival featuring local youth choirs at USC’s Annenberg School of Communication. Also scheduled is a free April 23 health clinic, which will include immunizations, dental check-ups, and eye and health exams.

The center, at 9900 S. Vermont Ave., renovated its fitness center after raising more than $100,000 during a three-month fund drive. “This community has a higher need than most others for fitness, (which) most people think is a recreational thing. But people have a far greater need to be involved in preventive medicine,” said Robert Wilkins, executive director of the Weingart YMCA. “People think poor folk have a greater agenda. They think, ‘You need to learn to read before you get around to lifting weights or running around a track.’

“We are doing this to mark our agenda for the next 10 years as we become more proactive as a health care provider in terms of fitness,” he said.
