A judge Monday set bail at $250,000 for Jose Santos Castaneda, charged with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm in connection with the shooting death of his 25-year-old wife in Santa Paula.

Ventura County Municipal Judge B. Barry Klopfer set the bail at a hearing in which Castaneda’s arraignment was continued until Monday at the request of Deputy Public Defender Steven P. Lipson.

Mina Castaneda of Oxnard died after being shot in the head during an argument with her husband last Saturday, authorities say.

Santa Paula police were called about 9 p.m. Saturday to the 200 block of Wakeford Avenue on the city’s west side with a report that a woman had been shot, police said. They found Mina Castaneda on the sidewalk outside a corner house near Wakeford Avenue and Bradley Street.

About 100 friends and relatives of the Oxnard College student attended her funeral services Friday. They said she had dreams of being a teacher.
