Cal’s Murray to Join Kidd in NBA Draft

Lamond Murray, who became California’s all-time leading scorer in three seasons at the school, announced Monday he would pass up his final year of eligibility and offer himself to the NBA draft.

Murray, a third-team All-American, joins fellow underclassman Jason Kidd in leaving Cal early. Kidd, Cal’s All-American point guard, announced last month he would forgo his last two years of eligibility.

The Sacramento Kings placed swingman Walt Williams on the injured list and activated center Randy Breuer in time for Monday night’s game against the Clippers. . . . Matt Kilcullen, who guided Jacksonville to a 17-11 record last season, was hired as basketball coach at Western Kentucky, signing a four-year contract to replace Ralph Willard, who took the coaching job at Pittsburgh. . . . Former Kansas point guard Adonis Jordan, who played at Cleveland High in Reseda, has signed to play in Australia.

Hockey

King right wing Dave Taylor’s retirement, which had become a foregone conclusion, will be announced at a news conference today at the Forum.

Taylor, 38 and with the club for 17 seasons, had seen limited action the last two seasons because of dizziness and headaches stemming from concussions.

The Kings’ all-time leader in games played (1,110), Taylor is the second-leading scorer in franchise history with 1,069 points.

The Kings said Wayne Gretzky will sit out the final two games of the season. He suffered a knee injury on Saturday in Winnipeg. Defenseman Marty McSorley will have surgery on Wednesday in Vancouver to repair a torn abdominal muscle, and defenseman Doug Houda will have surgery on his right shoulder on Thursday in Los Angeles. Center Robert Lang, who had surgery on his left shoulder last week, will need about 12 to 16 weeks to recover. . . . USA Hockey announced the Ducks’ Ron Wilson will coach the U.S. team at the World Championships April 25-May 8 in Italy. The Ducks’ Tim Army will be one of his assistants.

Hartford Whaler General Manager Paul Holmgren, arrested last month for drunken driving, will face the charges when he is released from the Betty Ford Center.

His attorney filed a not guilty plea to have the case continued, said Kevin Maxwell, Holmgren’s temporary replacement.

Whaler defenseman Bryan Marchment also faces a court date for a drunk-driving arrest, incurred Friday on his way to his home from a charity event.

Tennis

Third-seeded Richey Reneberg beat Chris Woodruff, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round of the U.S. Clay Court Championships at Birmingham, Ala. . . . Magnus Gustafsson, seeded third in the Nice Open, was upset in the first round by Thierry Guardiola, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-2.

Football

Michael Miller, whose punt returns sparked Notre Dame to two key victories last season, did not play in Notre Dame’s scrimmage Saturday, and Coach Lou Holtz said that Miller and defensive back Tracy Graham no longer were on the team. Holtz would not say why. . . . The Cincinnati Bengals re-signed wide receivers Tim McGee and Reggie Rembert. McGee had played for them for seven seasons before spending last season with the Washington Redskins. . . . Cornerback Ricky Reynolds, the former captain of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, signed with the New England Patriots.

Swimming

Budget problems prompted the University of Illinois to eliminate men’s swimming, but gender was one reason the team was chosen, Jim Kearns, an attorney for the school, told a federal appeals court.

Eight swimmers contended in a lawsuit they filed in May of 1993 that the university sexually discriminated against them by eliminating the men’s team but not the women’s team.
