SIMI VALLEY : City to Proceed With Water System Repair

Share

The Simi Valley City Council has voted to proceed with the first phase of a plan to spend $500,000 to upgrade and repair four water tanks and a number of pipelines damaged by the Jan. 17 earthquake.

The city will ask for bids for a consultant to determine the best way of repairing the water system, which was damaged during the quake, flooding many homes and leaving some without running water for days.

About $50,000 of the funds set aside for the repairs will be paid to the consultant, city officials said. The money had been budgeted last year to upgrade parts of the system.

After the quake, the city decided to focus on the most damaged areas, including three tanks at the top of Stow Street, near Barnard Street and Placerita Drive in Indian Hills. A fourth tank, on Walnut Street near Felix and Black avenues is also scheduled for repair.

Mayor Greg Stratton said the tanks would be upgraded to higher seismic standards than most homes.

“We’ll be in a situation where people are more likely to lose their house than have the water tank come down on top of them,” he said.
