ROSEMEAD : Man Shot to Death After Standoff With Deputies

A standoff between Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies and a distraught Rosemead man ended when he was fatally wounded Wednesday night by a single shotgun blast fired by a deputy after the man ignored repeated warnings to drop a pistol he was pointing at them, authorities said Thursday.

Arthur Victor Decapias Jr., 23, had been barricaded in his house at 9108 Guess St. for about half an hour Wednesday night when he emerged and began waving a semiautomatic pistol, Deputy Irma Vecerra said.

Deputies were called to the scene about 8 p.m. by Decapias’ parents, who told them their son was inside the house with a gun and threatening to kill anyone who came near him, Vecerra said.

After hearing a gunshot from inside the house, deputies reached Decapias by phone and attempted to negotiate, they said. After 25 minutes, a neighbor reported seeing Decapias hiding in some bushes next to the house and pointing a handgun at two deputies who were unaware he was there, Vecerra said.

Decapias lowered the pistol, walked to the front of the house and pointed the handgun at several other deputies. When he would not put down the weapon, he was shot, Vecerra said. He died at 9:39 p.m. at San Gabriel Valley Medical Center. No other injuries were reported.
