Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : Santa Clarita Ballot Recount Set

Share

The 10,426 ballots voters cast for City Council seats last week will be electronically recounted Tuesday.

H. Clyde Smyth, former superintendent of the William S. Hart Union High School District, edged out incumbent Jill Klajic for the third open seat on the council by 16 votes.

The recount was requested by Skip Newhall, Klajic’s campaign manager, who said he asked for a second vote tally because Klajic’s supporters otherwise “would always wonder ‘What if?’ ”

The recount is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at Santa Clarita’s temporary city offices, 21444 Golden Triangle Road.

Whoever requests a recount is charged for the staff time and supplies. Recounting the 10,426 ballots is projected to take four hours and cost $500 if done by computer or take five days and cost about $6,840 if counted by hand.

This is the first recount in the history of Santa Clarita, which became a city in December, 1987.

Smyth, who at last count had edged Klajic by 3,804 votes to 3,788, was sworn in Tuesday night along with returning incumbents Jo Anne Darcy and Carl Boyer.
