THE WORD ON WHAT’S HIP AND WHAT’S HYPE

Urban Survival

The barrage of working-class uniforms adopted by hip urbanites continues with the return to soldier suiting. This time around, however, survivalists are taking a sexier strike at camouflage, like the mini skort (skirt and short, $52) and vest ($44) from New York-based Living Doll. “It’s another take off menswear,” says designer Amanda Uprichard. “But it’s street inspired as well.” In contrast to the ill-fitting Army surplus gear usually adopted, the current trend “is more accessible than ever for the junior market,” she adds.

Sock Hop

With every skirt length available this season, hosiery lengths have replaced hems as the trend to watch. As hems rise, so do socks, with three options to consider: anklets, knee socks and thigh highs. The second choice looks ideal with short skirts for a schoolgirl look, says Milagros Cucuta of Hot Sox. And “anything over the knee is a very hip, young look with minis,” she says, instead of a full covered leg. “With the economy the way it is, people are buying leg wear to change the look of an outfit they already have.”

Dino Might

Sports sandal maker Teva has seen monumental success with its Terradactyl model (about $70). “It’s the whole concept of a lighter-weight foot bed, with trail lug sole that gives a grip and bite on varied terrain,” notes vice president Peter Link, who also sits on the design team. Among other new technology incorporated, the shoe features a polyurethane heel cushion that absorbs shock better than other materials. “The textured top sole feels good against the naked foot--and it keeps the foot in place.” Its texture reminded the team of dinosaur skin, hence the name, with a play on terra for the earth.

Time to Reflect

Among the few pieces the fashion- and cost-conscious should include in their wardrobes this year is something--anything--metallic. L’wren Scott of Bisou Bisou recommends at least one item mixed with other items you already own for “a look that’s very chic.” The Los Angeles label offers a slew of items made of a special satin jersey fabric, she says, in silver, bronze and even a black metallic. Pieces are priced from $36 to $70. “One ingenious factor about this fabric is that it looks great for day or night.”
