News, Tips & Bargains : ‘Face of the Spirits’: A Story of Masks
More than 100 masks representing 40 ethnic groups in the Republic of Zaire and northern Angola are featured in a new exhibition at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art.
“Face of the Spirits: Masks From the Zaire Basin” includes displays that range from a mere six inches high to a 7-foot ensemble.
The exhibit, which runs through Sept. 25, includes a nine-minute video offering an overview of masking traditions in the Zaire River Basin. The museum, 950 Independence Ave. SW, Washington, D.C., is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission is free.
