Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi will hear tonight how insurance agencies responded to Santa Clarita Valley residents in the wake of the Northridge earthquake.

Garamendi and the Santa Clarita City Council are hosts of a “town hall” meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club, 24909 Newhall Ave.

Santa Clarita has reportedly received dozens of calls from residents, especially senior citizens and mobile-home owners, about insurance concerns.

“The forum will address the personal interests and experiences (and) we hope will provide a level of confidence to our citizens,” said Assistant City Manager Ken Pulsamp.

The Jan. 17 earthquake caused about $244.4 million in damage in Santa Clarita. Private property in Santa Clarita incurred $145 million in damage, with 169 homes and 41 businesses declared uninhabitable and 560 homes and 50 businesses designated as having limited entry.

Garamendi and members of his staff are expected to address topics including dealing with under-evaluated claims, working with out-of-state insurance adjusters unfamiliar with Southern California and handling conflicting information from insurance carriers.
