Saying they were interested in bringing a minor league baseball team to Ventura County, Camarillo City Council members have approved spending as much as $25,000 for a consultant to conduct a study of the proposal.

During its Wednesday meeting, the council voted unanimously to spend the money with the cities of Ventura and Oxnard. Mayor Ken Gose said the consultant has yet to be named, and the exact price for the study must still be determined.

“I was gratified that my colleagues on the council supported this,” Gose said. “If this proposal works, I believe it’ll be good for the city and the county.”

Gose said preliminary discussions with professional baseball officials have indicated the willingness of at least one single A-rated minor league team to relocate to the county should a stadium be constructed.

Cost estimates for such a stadium, to be borne equally by the three cities, could run as high as $12 million. The facility would be designed to seat 4,000 to 6,000 fans, Gose said.
