SUN VALLEY : Rewards Planned for Illegal Dumping Tips
In hopes of cleaning up streets in his district, Los Angeles City Councilman Richard Alarcon announced plans Thursday to start a $5,000 reward fund for residents who tip police about illegal trash dumping on residential streets and alleys.
At a news conference near a Sun Valley alley where dumping is common, Alarcon said he hopes that the reward fund will motivate residents to help police crack down on a problem that has been plaguing the northeast San Fernando Valley for years.
Each person who provides police information that leads to the arrest of a person or persons for illegal dumping may be rewarded $250.
Tipsters who see illegal dumping should call police immediately by dialing 911, an Alarcon spokeswoman said. But if illegally dumped trash is found on a street and no culprit has been seen, tipsters should call the community relations office of the local police division, she said.
The reward money is funded from a special district cleanup account provided to each council member.
