Countywide : Students to Take Part in Building Contest

Share

Soon under construction: a competition.

In a countywide contest being held Saturday and Sunday at the Tustin Market Place, 12 student teams will be building mini-houses from the ground up.

The event is the fifth annual Design/Build Competition, coordinated by the Home Builders Council. Contestants will be students from high schools and community colleges who are learning about the construction industry.

“The purpose of the Design/Build Competition is to provide hands-on construction experience that is unavailable in most high school classroom settings,” said Janice Silverman, a spokeswoman for the event. “Professional building inspectors will inspect structures for compliance to building and safety codes. On Sunday, the structures will be judged by building-industry professionals, and awards will be presented.”

The contest is from 8 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the shopping center at Jamboree Road and El Camino Real. Awards will be presented at 2 p.m. Sunday. The activities, including the awards ceremony, are open to public viewing.

“The competition represents one of many educational programs developed by the Home Builders Council in an effort to promote career awareness of the construction industry,” Silverman said.
