Numerous Heads Field in Six-Horse Derby Trial

Numerous, who threw a shoe while running fourth in the Santa Anita Derby, heads a six-horse field on opening day Saturday at Churchill Downs in the Derby Trial, which hasn’t produced a Kentucky Derby winner since Tim Tam in 1958.

Numerous is more of a prospect for the May 21 Preakness, the second leg of the Triple Crown, than the Derby on May 7.

“If he won by 15 lengths and came back all right, then we might think about the Derby,” said trainer Charlie Whittingham, whose primary Derby contender is Strodes Creek.

Numerous, who will be ridden by Chris McCarron on Saturday, is a son of Mr. Prospector. He was bought for $1.7 million as a yearling by Howard Keck, whose family won the 1986 Derby with Ferdinand. Numerous, one of three million-dollar horses sold at auction in 1992, was the year’s highest-priced yearling. He ran twice last year, breaking his maiden at Santa Anita in November. This year he was second to Pollock’s Luck and Dramatic Gold in Santa Anita races before his fourth-place finish on April 9.

Others running in the one-mile Trial are Crary, Exclusive Praline, Tarzan’s Blade, Dynamic Asset and Camanche Trail.
