COSTA MESA : One Basketball Hoop to Be Put Up in Park

Share

Parks commissioners have voted to restore a single basketball hoop at a local park that neighbors complained was overrun by vulgar and noisy players.

The commission had removed all four baskets at Tanager Park in October after dozens of neighbors complained about the park. But local players appealed to the City Council in December, asking it to reconsider.

A study session was held with residents, and commissioners last week presented the single basket as a compromise.

Residents at the meeting said they can live with one basket, but will monitor the park and complain if the situation deteriorates again.

“When the hoops came down there was no profanity and no fights,” said Mary Shaw, who lives four blocks from the park. She said perhaps one hoop will not attract as many people.

“I don’t think a lot of the older kids will coming back to the court,” with only one basket, said Sara Mooney, a member of the Estancia High School girls basketball team. Mooney had presented a petition to the council to bring the hoops back.

About 50 residents attended the meeting, and many clapped as speakers denounced the courts. But about a dozen people also applauded as people spoke in support of the return of one hoop.

“One basket is better than nothing, so thanks,” said Mike Stapleton, 13, to the commission.

The hoop was to have been replaced by this morning. The commission also approved signs that forbid excessive noise, profanity, alcohol and drugs, littering or urination.

It will take about 45 days to have the signs made, according to a city staff member.
