The city’s plan to relocate two historic homes to a site across from City Hall is getting closer to happening.

The Whitaker-Jaynes and Bacon House, both in a city park on Manchester Boulevard, will be moved in late May to become part of a newly created historical district on Beach Boulevard.

The City Council, acting as the Community Redevelopment Agency, recently awarded a $48,357 contract to Snow House Movers Inc. of Garden Grove to move the homes to the Beach Boulevard site and to construct new foundations.

In a related action, the agency awarded a contract for the demolition of buildings at 6621 and 6631 Beach Blvd., the site to which the homes will be moved. The contract went to Viking Equipment Corp. of Glendale for $7,680. Plans are to demolish the homes Friday.

Moving the homes will allow the city to expand its auto center along Manchester Boulevard. Buena Park Toyota is planning to build its new dealership at the home sites in the city park.

The Whitaker-Jaynes farmhouse, built in 1887, is at its original location. The Bacon House, a squatter’s shack built sometime in the 1850s, was moved to the park site in the mid-1970s from its original location on Beach Boulevard.

Both homes will be part of a historical park. The area will include other historical buildings, such as the Stage Stop Hotel, now a residence, and the First Congregational Church.
