BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : TV Special Set for All-Star Voting
Major league baseball will announce its All-Star teams on national television for the first time, releasing the final vote totals for starters along with the chosen pitchers and reserves on July 3.
The announcement will be made on NBC during a one-hour program scheduled to start at 5 p.m. EDT. The game is scheduled for July 12 at Pittsburgh, also on NBC.
In the past, starters were announced on one day, with pitchers and reserves announced a day or two later.
Reliever Steve Howe was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the New York Yankees because of a strained groin muscle. . . . The Atlanta Braves placed shortstop Jeff Blauser on the 15-day disabled list because of astrained muscle in his left side. . . . The Minnesota Twins activated outfielder Shane Mack from the 15-day disabled list. . . . Philadelphia Phillie shortstop Kevin Stocker will be sidelined for two weeks to a month because of torn cartilage in his right wrist. . . . The Boston Red Sox called up reliever Todd Frohwirth from triple-A Pawtucket, R.I. . . . Michael Jordan, who entered the game in a one-for-20 slump, had a bases-loaded double in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie as the Birmingham Barons defeated the Orlando Cubs, 4-1. It was Jordan’s only hit.
