Hospital to Offer Free Health Aids for Women

Share

Women oversee their families’ health care needs to such an extent, experts say, that they often forget to look after their own health.

To acknowledge that reality--and to observe Mother’s Day--the Santa Monica Hospital Medical Center will offer an array of free health information and services for women this month at the Santa Monica Place shopping mall.

“We want to draw attention to the health of women, many of whom are the health care guardians of their families,” said Ted Braun, the hospital’s spokesman. “Many women are so busy, they forget about their own health.”

The first public clinic, “Body, Mind, Spirit, a Celebration of Contemporary Women,” will feature free blood pressure tests and screenings for skin cancer and other health problems.

At the clinic, to be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the mall’s Center Court, information will be available on breast health, breast self-examination, nutrition, maternity and reproductive medicine. Nine female physicians will be on hand to answer questions.

Throughout this month the medical center will sponsor weekly seminars at the shopping mall and the hospital on such topics as “Women, HIV and AIDS: What Are the Odds?” and “Menopause: Beyond the Myths.” Low-cost mammograms will also be offered.
