Pop Album Chart : Reba’s Making Her Move

Share

Reba McEntire may have replaced Wynonna Judd as the queen of country music. McEntire’s “Read My Mind” debuted at No. 5 and her “Greatest Hits Vol. 2.,” which has sold more than 2 million copies, is climbing the chart again, up six notches to No. 50. Her co-hosting of the Academy of Country Music Awards TV show this week will turn out to be a big sales boost. The detractors’ prediction that the vocal group All-4-One would be just another one-hit (“So Much in Love”) wonder is all wrong. The group’s debut album, “All-4-One,” continues to be a strong seller--No. 22 in its third week on the chart. That’s because of a second Top 10 single, eighth-ranked “I Swear,” which shot into the elite circle in just one month. On the pop singles chart, Ace of Base’s “The Sign” is still No. 1 and Madonna’s “I’ll Remember,” from the soundtrack of “With Honors,” is No. 4.

* Hole continues to plunge, disproving the old doctrine that any publicity is good publicity. This group, headed by Kurt Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, got a lot of media attention both because of his recent death and her drug problems. “Live Through This” even got good reviews. But the negative publicity, along with lack of airplay, has hurt. The album slipped to No. 80.
