The deadline to apply for disaster assistance for the Jan. 17 earthquake has been extended 60 days, a FEMA spokesperson said Friday.

Disaster relief agencies are continuing to receive more than 1,600 individual assistance applications daily, said Federal Emergency Management Agency spokesperson Russ Edmonston.

“With the aftershocks, people realize they may have more damage than they had with the original quake,” Edmonston said.

Local, state and federal agencies hope the new July 18 deadline will accommodate any additional requests for aid, he said.

Those seeking assistance can apply at any of the 11 earthquake service centers in the Los Angeles area or by calling the registration number at 800-462-9029, or 800-462-7585 for the hearing or speech impaired.

In the San Fernando Valley, earthquake service centers are situated in Northridge, Sylmar, Van Nuys, Sherman Oaks and at Cal State Northridge.

The deadline to apply for Small Business Administration loans was also extended to July 18, but the Oct. 17 deadline for SBA economic injury loans will not be extended, according to a statement released jointly by the assistance agencies.
