A 5-year-old girl was in critical condition late Friday after falling into a swimming pool, authorities said.

The girl was found by her mother about 9 a.m. in a pool on Tulsa Street in Granada Hills, according to Brian Humphrey, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman.

The mother, whose identity was withheld, called 911.

At that point, “the child had no pulse and was not breathing,” Humphrey said. The 911 operator gave instructions on how to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived.

“The child was doing poorly,” Humphrey said, “but the mother remained calm and took instructions well. During the entire time, she was continuing CPR.”

The girl was taken to Granada Hills Community Hospital in critical condition and was then transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit at Valley Presbyterian Hospital about 12:30 p.m., according to Hal Wurtzel, a spokesman for Valley Presbyterian.

The child was taken to Valley Presbyterian, Wurtzel said, because it has the largest pediatric intensive care unit in northern Los Angeles County.
