Hurdler Drue Powell and long jumper Mike Wright of the Glendale College track and field team have been suspended from competition for the rest of the season for violating team rules, Glendale Coach Tom McMurray said Friday.

The two freshman athletes will not compete in today’s Southern California junior college preliminaries at San Diego’s Balboa Stadium. The preliminaries serve as the qualifying meet for the Southern California championships on May 14, followed by the state championships at Cerritos College on May 21.

McMurray would not elaborate on the specifics of the violations, other than to say they occurred this week.

Powell, the 1993 state high school champion in the 110-meter high hurdles for Reseda High, won that event in last week’s Western State Conference championships at Bakersfield College. He has a personal best of 14.61 seconds.

Wright, a former three-sport standout at Glendale High, completed the requirements for a high school diploma at a Glendale continuation school last year before playing basketball for the Vaqueros last winter and competing in track this spring.

He has a personal best of 23 feet 9 1/2 inches in the long jump and finished second in the WSC championships.

Although Powell and Wright cannot compete for Glendale for the rest of the season, McMurray said, they are welcome to compete for the team next season.

Neither Powell nor Wright could be reached for comment.
