PREP SOFTBALL ROUNDUP : Ocean View Errors Help Fountain Valley Win

Ocean View committed two errors with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and Lynea Backlund drove in Paula Schoonover to give Fountain Valley the 2-1 victory over the ninth-ranked Seahawks in Sunset League action at Fountain Valley High School.

The Barons have sole possession of second place and Ocean View (16-6, 9-4) fell into fourth behind Huntington Beach.

In the second inning, Schoonover replaced Kelley Santa Cruz, who had injured her knee sliding into second. Schoonover got on base in the seventh on shortstop Angela Burke’s error, then an Janee Sansone’s error put Molly Sinclair aboard. Backlund hit a grounder up the third-base line past Mookie Hatcher, giving Fountain Valley (14-8-1, 9-3) the victory.

The Seahawks took the early lead on their only two hits in the third when Lisa Messick scored on a fielder’s choice.

Fountain Valley tied the score, 1-1, in the next inning. Lindsey Collins led off with a double up the middle. Lisa Layton laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Collins to third and Laurie Gillis hit a pop fly to left field allowing Collins to tag and score.

Baron pitcher Debbie Harrelson (10-6) allowed only two hits and two walks. Ocean View pitcher Kathy Ponce (15-5) struck out six and gave up four hits.
