THOUSAND OAKS : Arts Plaza Funding Group Raises Its Goal

Share

Confident they can raise money despite the stagnant economy, Alliance for the Arts fund-raisers have set a goal of accumulating another $6 million to support the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.

“It’s ambitious,” campaign director Richard Johnson said. “But we intend to do it.”

The alliance’s fund-raising campaign has already notched nearly $4 million in pledges from corporate donors and individuals.

Several big companies, including The Times, have offered substantial multiyear contributions. But the alliance has also relied on Thousand Oaks residents to chip in smaller amounts, by buying bricks for an outdoor walkway and name plaques for auditorium seats.

The alliance earlier this year surpassed its original goal--a $3-million endowment--and organizers are determined to keep pressing for funds. The new targets call for the endowment to reach $7 million by October’s grand opening, and $10 million by next spring.

Interest earnings from the endowment will help subsidize the plaza’s operating costs, making the theater affordable for community groups to rent. Proceeds could also help keep ticket prices low for senior citizens and students.
