COSTA MESA : Panel OKs Opening of Organic Market

Share

The Planning Commission this week approved an organic farmers market that may open next month behind an unusual shopping center.

Shaheen Sadeghi, owner of The LAB at 2930 Bristol St., said he would like to play host to up to 15 farmers on Tuesday afternoons. The farmers would set up stalls behind the collection of retail stores that make up The LAB to sell fruits and vegetables.

The LAB opened earlier this year and was touted as an “anti-mall.” Alternative clothes, music and other items are sold at the center, which also has a pool table, art gallery and performance space.

Organically grown fruits and vegetables are grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

The commission also approved the conversion of the Park Place Inn at 1662 Newport Blvd. into a 55-unit single-room occupancy complex for low-income residents.

Developer Brent Ogden Jr. and his partner Merrill Butler opened the county’s first SRO at 2450 Newport Blvd. Ogden told the commission that Costa Mesa Village, a former Travelodge, is full and has had no security problems.
