Defending world-champion Derek Ho of Hawaii won his second-round heat to advance at the Bud Pro Surfing tour stop at Huntington State Beach.

Pat O’Connell of Laguna Niguel won his second-round heat despite competing with stitches in his right foot from a cut he suffered during a fall in Thursday’s first round.

Also advancing were 1992 world-champion Kelly Slater of Cocoa Beach, Fla., Newport Beach’s Richie Collins, Seal Beach’s Marty Thomas, Laguna Beach’s Jeff Booth, Vince De La Pena of Laguna Niguel, and San Clemente’s Shane Beschen and Mike Parsons. San Clemente’s Dino Andino was eliminated with a fourth-place finish.

Competition resumes at 7 a.m. today. The finals are tentatively scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday.

Billy Oswald of Huntington Beach finished seventh at the World Surfing Championships at Barra Da Tijuca, Brazil. Oswald was among three other Americans, Chris Strother (11th), Brian Hewitson (9th) and Corez Lopez, of the U.S. Amateur Surf Team Juniors Division, to finish among the top 15 in the world.
