A Dallas thunderstorm and tornado forced suspension of second-round play late Saturday afternoon in the weather-plagued GTE Byron Nelson Classic.

Ben Crenshaw shared the lead with David Ogrin, Mark Carnevale and Brad Bryant at eight-under par when play was abandoned by the storm.

Only six members of the 156-man field completed second-round action.

Three players withdrew, and the other 147 marked their positions on two rain-soaked courses. Duke Butler, tournament director for the PGA Tour, said play will not resume before noon today, leaving two possibilities.

Play may be abandoned after 36 holes and the tournament ruled complete or a third round might be played Monday.

“It’s a shame,” Crenshaw said. “If you’re scheduled to play 36 holes in a day, you want to go ahead and play 36 holes. Nobody likes to start and stop.”

Crenshaw had an opening 66 on the par-70 Las Colinas course and was four under on the par-71 Cottonwood Valley layout with four holes to go when play was held up.

Tom Byrum, Neal Lancaster and David Edwards were at seven under par. Lancaster had six holes to go and Edwards five.

After lurking in the background for two rounds of the LPGA Championship at Wilmington, Del., Laura Davies finally made her move, shooting a two-under-par 69 to share the lead with Meg Mallon after 54 holes.

Mallon, who finished second behind Davies last week, also had a 69 for a 211 total. She led Davies by three strokes with six holes to go, but bogeyed Nos. 13 and 15.

Alice Ritzman, bidding for her first victory in 402 events, bogeyed No. 18 for a 71 that put her at 212, tied with Patty Sheehan.

Lee Trevino shot a seven-under-par 65, which included a 29 on the front nine and constant trouble on the back, and shared the lead with DeWitt Weaver, Jimmy Powell and Jerry McGee at 135 after two rounds of the PaineWebber Invitational at Charlotte, N.C.

Trevino is even par on the back nine and nine-under on the front for his two rounds.
