COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Fullerton, Irvine Runners Win at Big West
Fullerton’s Heather Killeen led a 1-2-3 county sweep Saturday in the women’s 5,000 meters at the Big West track and field championships in Las Cruces, N.M.
Killeen ran 17 minutes 51.10 seconds to edge Irvine’s Laura Monson (17:51.47) and Traci Goodrich (18:10.28).
Monson, a freshman, came back to win the 3,000 in 10:17.85 with Killeen second in 10:28.73.
UC Irvine’s Michelle Merritt won the heptathlon with 4,558 points, overtaking Nevada’s Janel Chandler in the final event.
Irvine’s David Mayeda, from University High, won the men’s 400 hurdles with a career-best 51.09. Fullerton’s Steve Frisone, was second in the 1,500 in 3:52.28, and teammate Mike Tansley was third in the 5,000 in 15:02.40.
For the women, Irvine’s Andrea Dean placed second in the 100 in 12.06 and third in the 200 in 25.06.
Utah State won the men’s and women’s team titles. The best county finish was by the Irvine women, who finished fourth.
In nonconference baseball:
CS Fullerton 11, USC 3--Mark Kotsay was four for four with two runs batted in, and Sal Mancuso was three for three with four RBIs for Fullerton (41-12).
Matt Wagner threw a seven-hitter, walking none and striking out six for his 12th victory.
Walter Dawkins hit his 16th homer for the Trojans (34-18).
The teams conclude the series at 1 p.m. today at Titan Field.
In Big West Conference softball:
Cal State Fullerton 8-3, UC Santa Barbara 1-0--Trinity Johnson threw the second-game shutout, and Monica Bagalayos had four hits in two games for Fullerton, which finished the regular season 32-27, 21-11 in the Big West.
