Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : Aliano to Join Hart School Board

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A 54-year-old Los Angeles police officer has been named to the governing board of Santa Clarita’s junior high and high schools.

George Aliano was chosen from eight applicants interviewed this weekend by the four other board members to fill the William S. Hart Union High School District trustee post that Peter Warren vacated in March.

“My whole career is one of public service,” said Aliano, a 23-year Santa Clarita resident. “At least (as a trustee) I can have input into issues that can turn kids around so I don’t have to deal with them as an officer.”

Aliano is scheduled to be sworn in Wednesday. He says he sees safety, curriculum and closed campuses as the important issues facing the board.

The Hart district oversees Santa Clarita’s three high schools and three junior high schools, with one more of each opening this fall.

Warren, 36, resigned in March, 105 days after he was elected, saying he was going to work as a consultant to a Canadian development company. Trustees opted to fill the seat by appointment rather than pay for a special election.

Other applicants for the post were teacher Adrienne Asarch; attorney Robert Crockett; Bruce Fox, a police officer; Bill Manetta, president of the Santa Clarita Water Co.; Ronnie Silver, a newspaper columnist; James Temple, a computer lab technician for College of the Canyons, and Art Wilde, an AT&T; telecommunications manager.
