Stanford’s Marquess Says Players Arrested Monday Will Be Punished
Stanford baseball Coach Mark Marquess said in a statement Thursday that disciplinary action will be taken against four players who were among seven Cardinal athletes arrested early Monday morning for allegedly vandalizing a campus sculpture. Marquess did not specify what the punishment would be.
Junior infielders Dusty Allen and Todd LaRocca, sophomore pitcher Bob Gardner and freshman pitcher Brendan Sullivan allegedly were part of a group that attacked the statue, a monument to gays and lesbians, with a wood bench and spray paint. Football players Mark Butterfield and Jason White and wrestler Thomas Irwin also were arrested.
Stanford won the championship in the Pacific 10 Southern Division this season and will open play in the NCAA tournament next week. Suspensions could be part of the disciplinary action.
“The actions of the baseball players involved in this incident is completely unacceptable behavior and will not be tolerated,” Marquess said.
Allen, one of the Cardinal’s best players, is already scheduled to sit out Stanford’s playoff opener as a mandatory one-game suspension for fighting.
