Lester Horton Dance Awards Announced : Movement-based art: Choreographers, performers, troupes and writers are cited by the Dance Resource Center of Greater Los Angeles.

The third annual Lester Horton Dance Awards, which honor “all movement-based art” presented in public in the Los Angeles area in 1993, were presented Saturday by the Dance Resource Center of Greater Los Angeles at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center.
The awards for outstanding achievement include, but are not limited to, ballet, modern, ethnic, jazz and tap dance.
This year’s awards also celebrate dance staging, dance teaching and dance writing.
This years winners are:
Choreography: Stephanie Gilliland, for “Coriolanus.”
Performance/Individual: Mehmet Sander, for “Single Space.”
Performance/Company: Loretta Livingston & Dancers, for “Grandma Moses Project.”
Restaging, Revival or Reconstruction: Jazz Tap Ensemble, for “Tribute” and “Doxi.”
Visual design: Liz Stillwell, for Los Angeles Chamber Ballet Concert.
Sound: Music, Score, Text: David Karagianis, for Rose Polsky and Dancers Concert.
Staging Traditional Dance: Danza Floricanto USA, for John Anson Ford Theatre Concert.
Staging Traditional Dance: Ramaa Bharadvaj and the Angahara Dancers, for “Nadanta Natanam.”
Special Dance Award: Lewis Segal, dance writer, Los Angeles Times.
Sustained Achievement in Teaching: Don Hewitt.
Sustained Achievement in Teaching: Gary Bates.
Sustained Achievement: Judith Scalin (Loyola Marymount University).
Board of Directors Award: Jody Leader, dance writer, Los Angeles Daily News.
