CSUN SHINES: The Cal State Northridge Matadors softball team is one-for-one in the College World Series in Oklahoma City (C1). Pitcher Amy Windmiller led the team in its first-round victory over Missouri by striking out 11 and allowing only four hits. Final score: 5-3.

BUCKING THE EEOC: Rep. Howard P. (Buck) McKeon (R-Santa Clarita) opposes proposed Equal Employment Opportunity Commission guidelines intended to help curb religious harassment in workplaces (B5). . . . McKeon, a Mormon, claims that the proposal would bring about “religion-free zones,” but Rep. Howard L. Berman (D-Panorama City) counters that it is aimed at “disparaging comments” that might make workers “feel that they are not held in good standing.”

BIG HIT: CityWalk (above) is a year old, and no matter how people feel about its symbolism and aesthetic value, one thing’s for sure: It’s a tremendous success. In fact, an estimated 2 million people have come specifically to see the Universal City complex, twice the number that MCA had hoped for. . . . “It’s a good place to hang out and not spend too much money,” one visitor said. HOMEWARD BOUND: He may have won a Nobel Prize, but some Russians don’t think that Alexander Solzhenitsyn is making the smartest decision by moving back to his homeland this week. Ellen Moiseyev, hostess at the Moscow Nights restaurant in Studio City, says the country has changed dramatically since he went into exile two decades ago. . . . “The people who loved him then have left,” she said.

ABORTION: The two sides of the abortion debate, as expected, had far different reactions to President Clinton’s signing Thursday of a bill making it a crime to deny women access to clinics (A1, A20). . . . Tammy Trouillon, who works at a Sherman Oaks clinic, says women now “have the law on their side,” while Laura Sharp, a Valley spokeswoman for Operation Rescue, said it “turns good, decent human beings into felons.”
