UC Irvine’s Mayeda Earns NCAA Berth
UC Irvine hurdler David Mayeda will compete at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Boise, Ida., the college announced Sunday.
Mayeda had posted a provisional qualifying time of 51.09 seconds in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in winning the Big West Conference title May 14. The automatic qualifying time is 50.70 but Mayeda’s time was fast enough to make the 24-man field.
Mayeda, a junior from University High, will be the first Anteater to qualify for the NCAA meet since 1992. The 400 hurdle preliminaries are Wednesday. The final is Friday.
