Field Hockey

The 23rd annual California Cup field hockey tournament, which attracted about 1,000 players from around the world, concluded Monday with the championship matches for the nine competing divisions at Moorpark College.

“It went real well,” said Tom Harris, who founded the California Cup in 1971. “It’s a lot better than it used to be. It’s larger and a lot better organized.”

Six teams participated in the inaugural tournament, but Harris has seen interest in the sport skyrocket, especially locally. This year, 78 teams participated in the three-day event.

“It’s a little different because there’s so few playing it’s like a brotherhood,” he said. “It’s growing and people are positive about it.”

The West Van Millionaires from West Vancouver, B.C., won the gold in the super men’s division, defeating Greenwich FHC from Stamford, Conn.

In the men’s competitive division, the Cougars from Camarillo, won the gold medal, defeating the L.A. Tigers from Northridge in the championship match.
