A Parade, Pageant and More
The Miss Full Moons pageant that takes place Friday to kick off the three-day fifth annual Four Moons Powwow isn’t your average beauty contest. The young girls, 13 to 18, will dress in tribal colors and perform traditional Native American dances, and will explain what they plan to do to help others understand their culture. The one chosen to be princess will represent the Full Moons Powwow at other powwows.
The Four Moons Powwow also includes singing, storytelling, contests and intertribal dancing, food and crafts on all three days. Miss Full Moons Powwow contest is 6-9 p.m. On Saturday, representatives of Apache, Navajo, Cahuilla and other tribes will participate in the Fontana Days Parade.
The parade will be followed by gourd dancing (a dance in honor of veterans) from noon-2 p.m. The grand entry at 2 p.m. features Native Americans in traditional regalia performing the flag dance in the arena, along with singing and an opening prayer. At 5:30 p.m., the Native American of the Year will be announced.
On Sunday, gourd dancing will be held at noon, a grand entry at 1 p.m. The event, at California Steel Industries, 9400 Cherry Ave., in Fontana, is free. (909) 823-6150.
