POINT MUGU : Inquiry Continues in Emergency Landing
Military officials on Thursday said they are still investigating why a helicopter that took off from Point Mugu Naval Air Weapons Station was forced to make an emergency landing near Lake Pyramid.
“We don’t know what happened,” said Cpl. Jeff Evans, spokesman for the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, where the UH-1 Huey helicopter was based. “It’s still under investigation.”
A helicopter carrying six Marines from Camp Pendleton made a stop at Point Mugu and left about 6:05 p.m. Tuesday, Evans said.
About 7:30 p.m., the aircraft was forced to land two miles southwest of Lake Pyramid, Evans said.
None of the Marines were hurt during the landing, and the helicopter sustained minor damage, Evans said.
The Marines were scouting the area to look for a place to establish a communications relay site, Evans said.
A military investigation in such cases typically lasts four to six weeks, officials said.
