SOUTH COUNTY : Cable Firm Honors Teacher, 3 Students

South County students and a teacher recently were honored for their educational achievements by a local cable television company.

Capistrano Valley High School instructor Jim Corbett was named 1994 Teacher of the Year by Dimension Cable Co. The company also gave $1,000 scholarships to three students.

Romy Christensen of Laguna Hills High School, Lisa Hassan of San Clemente High School and Troy Witt of Irvine High School received communications scholarships from the company, which serves South County and Irvine.

“These very talented young scholars should be commended on their accomplishments and impressive goals for the future,” said Leo Brennan, Dimension vice president and general manager. “Our Teacher of the Year should be applauded for creative and effective use of cable programming in the classroom.”

The scholarships are given to students planning a career in the communications field. Corbett, an international relations instructor, also recently won a C-SPAN “Equipment for Education” grant for his work.

Judges who picked the winners included state Sen. Marian Bergeson (R-Newport Beach), Laguna Beach Mayor Ann Cristoph, San Clemente Mayor Scott Diehl, Coastline News Editor David Wilson and Mission Viejo Mayor Susan Withrow.
