20 Hurt in Two Attacks by Wasps
More than 20 people were treated for stings after two yellow jacket attacks Friday in Berkeley’s Tilden Park.
The first attack about 10 a.m. involved 12 schoolchildren and an adult on a hiking trail near Lake Anza, said Deputy Fire Chief Gary Bard. About Two hours later, wasps attacked nine people about a quarter-mile away. Injuries were considered minor.
Bard said all of the sting victims --including several students from Sheldon Elementary School in El Sobrante and Downer School in San Pablo--were in good condition. But they were sent to a hospital as a precaution.
“When you’re dealing with 10- and 11-year-old children on a school outing . . . you can’t take any chances,” Bard said.
Bard called the attack a “very unusual occurrence.”
