More than 200 students of the Ventura County extension campus of La Verne University participated in recent graduation ceremonies, campus officials said.

The number of graduates from the Oxnard and Point Mugu satellite campuses was the highest in their 25-year history, said Dorothy John, who directs the two centers.

“We opened our new center in September, 1991, and a lot of them have finally finished,” John said. “This was an unusually big year. A lot of them were in a hurry to finish, and others had been at it a long time. It just all converged this year.”

John said the 205 graduates represent more than 10% of the private university’s Class of 1994. The commencement ceremony was held May 29 at the main campus in La Verne.

The 103-year-old institution offers bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and doctorates in a variety of fields but most of the curricula is geared toward working adults.

The most popular degrees are in business, John said.

“That’s where the jobs are,” she said. “Plus, the private sector is funding its students. So once they turn in their grades, they get reimbursed from their employers for the cost of their tuition.”
