Ventura will pour as much as $6.4 million into repairing and upgrading its largest reservoir, the Power Reservoir, located at the city’s filtration plant on North Ventura Avenue.

City Council members authorized the city staff Monday night to send the project out to bid, with $6.4 million being the staff’s estimated cost for the project.

The city built the Power Reservoir in the early 1930s and added a metal roof in 1939. The reservoir--which is in need of replacement or repair--can store up to 18 million gallons of potable water, all of it drawn from the Ventura River.

The repair project will include constructing a center dividing wall, relining the reservoir bottom, repairing the roof, and upgrading the reservoir’s instrumental and electrical systems.

City planners say about $5 million of the funding for the repairs will come out of Ventura’s capital improvement budget. The remainder of the money will be drawn from a special reservoir repair fund set aside in the city budget.
