TUSTIN : Council Approves Condo Project

Final approval was unanimously granted by the City Council for The Orchards, a 223-unit condominium complex that will be built on 14.6 acres at Greenway Drive and Tustin Ranch Road, next to Tustin Ranch Golf Course.

In keeping with the project’s name, an orchard of 119 miniature kumquat trees will be planted at the site. The small, vineyard-like grove is designed to give residents a quiet place to appreciate nature.

Project applicant Terry Crowther described the orchard as “a very romantic idea” that should appeal to potential condominium buyers.

Children living in the complex are “going to have a lot of fun having kumquat fights,” predicted Councilwoman Tracy Worley, who said she used to have orange fights when she was growing up.

Councilman Jeffrey Thomas was also enthusiastic about the project, calling it “very well thought-out” and a “unique idea.”

Tustin resident Merle Ogle, who lives next to the project site, said he welcomes the orchard and is glad the condominium complex will not be built to its maximum density. Under city guidelines, the developer, John Laing Homes, could have applied for an additional 142 condominium units at the site.
