Trakh, Wunder Join UCI Basketball Staff

Maz Trakh and George Wunder have been named assistant coaches by UC Irvine basketball Coach Rod Baker.

Trakh has been an assistant at Riverside College the last five seasons. Wunder was the UCI team manager for three years and played basketball at Rochester.

Baseball signings: Aaron Boone, a junior third baseman from USC who also played at Villa Park High, signed with the Cincinnati Reds. Boone hit .340 with six home runs and drove in 40 runs.

Brandon Hoalton, a sophomore pitcher from Rancho Santiago College, and teammate Daryle Ward, a freshman first baseman, also signed.

Hoalton, who won 24 games in two seasons, was taken by the Atlanta Braves.

Ward, drafted by the Detroit Tigers, hit .314 with nine home runs and 45 RBIs.

Matt Kenney has been hired as the girls’ soccer coach at Canyon High. Kenney was an assistant for the Comanches last season. . . . Tustin’s Jon Lauderdale, who hit .378 last season, was selected in the late rounds of the amateur baseball draft by the Seattle Mariners. . . . Summer Gingrich, who set Saddleback College’s 1,500 meter record (4 minutes 48.44 seconds), has signed with Mississippi State. Teammate Brian Cullum, who finished fourth in the 3,000 steeplechase at the State meet, will attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Middle-distance runner Aymee Robles, also from Saddleback, is going to Nevada Las Vegas. . . . Brett Waslefsky and Derrick Bly, who played baseball at Arizona Pima College, have signed with Concordia. Waslefsky, an outfielder, hit .390 and Bly, an infielder, hit .355.
