Still bothered by a lingering virus, Eddie Delahoussaye has given up the mount on Strodes Creek in Saturday’s Belmont Stakes.

Delahoussaye replaced Corey Black on the Halo colt for the Kentucky Derby and they finished second behind Go For Gin. Jerry Bailey, who has ridden Strodes Creek in his New York workouts for trainer Charlie Whittingham, will fill in for Delahoussaye.

“I called Arthur (Hancock, one of Strodes Creek’s owners) this morning and told him,” Delahoussaye said late Tuesday afternoon. “He told me to come for a couple of days and see how I feel. But if I got there, then felt bad, it would be a wasted trip and I said I wouldn’t be doing them any justice. I’m going to ride (today) and then take off until Sunday.”

Delahoussaye, 42, visited Peter Gabor, a blood specialist recommended by trainer Bobby Frankel, on Monday.

“He ran some blood tests, but we won’t know the results until Friday,” Delahoussaye said. “He tested me for three different kinds of viruses and he X-rayed my sinuses and my chest.

“I don’t know what’s going on. It’s aggravating. I’m going to work some horses while I’m off and I might go to Del Mar for a couple of days.”
