Panel to Discuss Plan to Close Lopez Dump

A committee of the Los Angeles City Council will meet Monday in Lake View Terrace to discuss the closure plans for the controversial Lopez Canyon Landfill.

At the request of Councilman Richard Alarcon, who heads the council’s Public Works Committee, the meeting was scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Lake View Terrace Recreation Center, 11075 Foothill Blvd.

Residents near the landfill have been up in arms since March when the city’s Bureau of Sanitation recommended that the city renew the city-owned dump’s temporary operating permit--due to expire in 1996--keeping it open until the year 2000.

The extended life of the landfill could save the city $72 million over the cost of hauling city waste to other local dumps, according to city officials.

But Alarcon has asked sanitation officials to discuss with residents the closure plans for the landfill and to outline alternatives to keeping the landfill open another four years.
